FAQ's
- What terminals work with
AIRPAL?
- Due to the ever-changing
variety of terminals and application software it is difficult to test every
combination. By design AIRPAL should work with almost any terminal that
requires a dial tone line to transmit its data. The complications are
usually related to the software application and how the terminal dials into
the Host Processor.
- Two major issues that have been found to
be a problem are:
- 1. The Host Processor phone number is
not a valid number for a cellular network. The "950" exchange
is not recognized by most cellular networks, and local exchange numbers
will most likely not work if you roam outside of your wireless system's
local coverage area. For the best results your terminal should be
programmed with an "800" number to minimize any dialing
issues.
- 2. Your terminal "pre dials"
the Host Processor. This is when a card is swiped on the terminal and
the terminal dials the host before you enter the remaining information,
such as the total dollar amount of the sale. For use with AIRPAL, your
terminal must be loaded with an application that does not dial the host
until the last piece of data is entered into the terminal.
- If I have to place my
wireless phone into the analog mode, am I being charge a higher rate by my
wireless service provider?
- Most wireless service
providers still allow you to use analog transmission without paying a
premium. The only way to be completely sure is contact your wireless
service provider.
- I have placed my
wireless phone into the analog mode using the "FCN + 2" method
outline in my phones user manual, but I still cannot complete
transactions. Why?
- The "FCN + 2"
method will not work with AIRPAL. To properly place your wireless phone
into the analog mode for POS use, you must follow the steps described in
the 'Configuring Your Wireless Phone' section of the POS Application
Supplement Guide.
- While my phone is
placed in AIRPAL, will I be able to receive calls on my wireless phone?
- While placed in the AIRPAL
all audible tones are muted on your wireless phone. Therefore your phone
will not ring, making it difficult for you to tell when a call is coming
in. If the flip is open on the display you can see the incoming call
indicator, you could then remove the phone from AIRPAL and answer the
call.
- Since my wireless
phone will not ring while seated in the AIPAL cradle, can I use a
hands-free accessory so that I can listen for incoming calls?
- No - the background noise
that is picked up from the hands-free microphone will cause POS
transactions to fail.
- How strong must the
wireless signal be for AIRPAL to operate?
- To process POS
transactions successfully your wireless phone must have at least a
continuous three "bars" of receive signal strength were the
AIRPAL is located. This is typically displayed on the top of your wireless
phones display.
- Is there a portable/
battery operated version of AIRPAL?
- No - a "cigarette
lighter" adapter for use in a vehicle or any other power source with
a cigarette light receptacle.
- Can I use a
"Pre-Paid" wireless phone with AIRPAL?
- No - the additional
authorization entries for the pre-paid phone system will interfere with
the POS terminals ability to dial into the Host Processor.
- Is there any way to
"boost" the signal of my wireless phone for better performance?
- No - at this time there is
no adapter available to output the radio signal from the wireless phone to
a booster device or external antenna.
- I have a phone on the
AT&T Wireless Network and I cannot switch the phone into the analog
mode. Why?
- Most likely that feature
is not enabled in the software of the phone that you have. This is typical
of most Motorola phones on the AT&T network.
- Which wireless network
works best with AIRPAL for POS transactions?
- Due to the amount of
wireless systems available, and the territories that they cover, it is
difficult to say one is better than another. The key feature that is
required for AIRPAL to process POS transactions is the wireless systems
ability to provide analog cellular service.
- My terminal dials a
950-xxxx number to connect to the Host Processor. My terminal works fine
connected to a landline, but when connected to AIRPAL I cannot complete a
transaction.
- Most wireless networks do
not recognize the "950" exchange as being a valid dialed number.
Contact your merchant service provider to see if the terminal can be
programmed with an "800" number.
- Can I us my GSM phone
with AIRPAL?
- No - due to the difference
in the GSM wireless phone technology it is not compatible with AIRPAL.
- I am having trouble
completing transactions with AIRPAL, what should I do?
- First, refer to the
Troubleshooting section of the manual to see if any of those situation
relate to your situation. You can download the manual in PDF format at the
top of this page. It could be as simple as a terminal setting (for
information on your POS terminal, contact your Merchant Service Provider).
